Biography

Dr. Md Safat Sikder joined the University of Illinois at Urbana-Champaign (UIUC) as a Postdoctoral Researcher Associate in November 2023. He previously held postdoctoral positions at Kansas State University (K-State) and NASA Jet Propulsion Laboratory (JPL). Dr. Sikder received his Ph.D. in Civil Engineering from the University of Washington, Seattle. He has experience working in quasi-governmental research institutes in Bangladesh.

Research Interests

The application of remote sensing, GIS, and numerical modeling in surface water hydrology is the main research area of Dr. Sikder. Currently, he is engaged in a project funded by NASA that aims to harmonize the SWOT a-priori lake and river databases. SWOT, a recently launched satellite mission, will provide global data on river discharge and lake water storage changes. The harmonized SWOT lake-river database is needed to better understand the global water cycle through the synergistic use of these two surface water fluxes.
