Department to Offer Summer GIS Course Online!!

This summer the department will offer its first online course GEOG 379: Introduction to Geographic Information Systems from early June through early August. The course will be taught by Professor Heath Robinson, who will be joining the department as a Lecturer. Registration for the course is now open. Welcome to the Department of Geography in the School of Earth, Society and Environment - a unit within the College of Liberal Arts and Sciences.  Our outstanding faculty, students, and staff focus on a broad range of topics in geography - ranging from social and environmental issues, to geographic information system technology, to river processes and management. We are committed to the integration of high quality research, instruction, and outreach programs to provide a comprehensive educational experience for students at the graduate and undergraduate levels. Our approach is highly interdisciplinary and involves interaction with programs, faculty, and initiatives across campus and at other universities and institutions. Convocation (graduation) for Geography students

The School of Earth, Society & Environment's convocation ceremony will be held on May 12, 2012 at 1:30 p.m. at the Tryon Festival Theatre, Krannert Center for the Performing Arts. Tickets will be available for pickup at 220 Davenport Hall beginning on Monday, May 7th, between 9:00am-Noon, and 1:00-5:00pm. Please view the SESE website for more ticket information.

GUNERALP AND RHOADS WIN GROVE KARL GILBERT AWARD

Inci Guneralp,Texas A&M University, and Bruce Rhoads were awarded the Grove Karl Gilbert Award for Excellence in Geomorphic Research awarded by the Association of American Geographers at the 2012 AAG meeting in New York City.


Forests in developing countries thrive with switch to local management

Ashwini ChhatreGeography Professor Ashwini Chhatre's research "has found that shifting the control of forest management from a centralized bureaucracy to those living next to the forest has not just helped the local people; it has also led to a comeback for forest cover in many places."

Yanli Zhao published in leading GIS Journal

Yanli Zhao, a PhD Candidate working in the CyberInfrastructure and Geospatial Information Laboratory (CIGI), is the first author of "A Parallel Computing Approach to Viewshed Analysis of Large Terrain Data Using Graphics Processing Units," in press in the International Journal of Geographical Information Science.
